Pedal for Scotland attracts 9,000 cyclists on a perfect Scottish day
This year's Pedal for Scotland, on Sunday 12 September 2010, saw 9,000 incredible people cycle 51 miles, 100 miles or off-road for causes across Scotland, including Maggie's.
An astonishing 3,750 people took part in the annual cycle for Maggie's, including TV's Aggie MacKenzie. The cyclists were supported by 50 volunteers and six volunteer masseurs who supported the cyclists after their amazing journeys. The cyclists were greeted by glorious sunshine throughout the day.
Participants are given the opportunity to take part in a 51-mile Challenge Ride from Glasgow Green to Edinburgh's Victoria Park. This year over 700 cyclists braved the brand new 100 Mile Sportive Ride and 300 took part in the off-road Family Ride.
Proving that age is no barrier to taking part in Pedal for Scotland, five year-old Adam Fleming from Falkirk joined his dad on a tandem bike, stopping to collect change for Maggie's on their journey. The team from Maggie's were on hand at Glasgow Green to create a paty atmosphere offering face painting for those taking part in the Family Ride.
Claire Benjamin, Events Manager at Maggie's, said: "Maggie's are delighted to be the charity partner for Pedal for Scotland again in 2010. The event was a great success. Over 3,750 cyclists chose to raise funds for Maggie's, an incredible turnout - we couldn't be more grateful for their hard work training a fundraising.
"To date we have raised £105,000 from this year's Pedal for Scotland and we're looking forward to smashing last year's total of £250,000! Thank you so much to all the volunteers who turned up and gave their time and to Strathmore Water, Tunocks and Nature Valley who provided well needed refreshments throughout the ride."
Maggie's is the Official Charity Partner of Pedal For Scotland.
